This car was designed around the "Purpose built Police Cruiser" with a BMW diesel engine. While an excellent idea, this company now faces serious challenges to raise capital after the Department Of Energy said NO to giving them any money.
This car and the company may be gone before it really ever got started but that doesn't mean that diesel police cruisers should be seen as endangered, in fact quite the contrary.
When the E7 first came to light back in 2007 there were very few diesel car choices available. Today, in the fall of 2013 we have new and soon to be released diesel car choices from BMW, Mercedes VW, Chevrolet, Mazda, Porsche (and Toyota, down the road thanks to BMW partnership), among others.
Law enforcement vehicles may be the last of the emergency vehicles after ambulances and fire trucks to be diesel equipped but I believe that it is now their time.
Diesel cars offer advantages over gasoline or hybrid cars with long hours spent at idle, typically with the heat or A/C on and emergency lights, radios and other energy sapping uses. Gasoline hybrid cars aren't created to handle this demand. Diesel cars handle this taxing demand better and more efficiently, in any weather condition.
Diesel fuel has a much higher flashpoint than gasoline and is thus more suitable to open gun fire, riskier driving pursuits, or everyday driving hazards.
Diesel engines deliver more torque, making them most useful for everyday driving or for plowing a perp's car.
Last but certainly not the least, I must mention that diesel power typically delivers around 20-30% more efficiency than their equivalent gasoline engine counterparts. The diesel argument makes more sense when you consider how many miles are gobbled up driving at all hours, idling at the roadside or the incident scene. The money saved on fuel after just the first year's operation can contribute an impressive amount of funds to a police department budget.
So, to recap diesel in US law enforcement vehicles makes sense for them, as it does for most serious drivers. Diesel offers the workhorse values of practicality, efficiency and safety. in other words diesel delivers the savings without compromise.
It would be great if the rest of government was as easy to improve.
