I have been an insurance agent for the last few months and during this time I have learned a few things that the general public isn't aware of. Let me share a couple of things that I am allowed to share, for the benefit of all.
This article concerns contractors and business owners, so ponder for awhile if you use your vehicle to make money with deliveries or perhaps hauling other people in your privately insured vehicle. If you involve your private vehicle in the use of your business in anyway outside of driving to and from work you may need to add a "business use" endorsement to your vehicle coverage. If you carry business supplies or work out of your private vehicle at any time then your need could easily increase beyond a "business use" endorsement and into a commercial policy. In fact people who deliver pizza or the newspaper, unless otherwise covered by a policy from their employer are not typically covered under their personal insurance. My research has shown that if the burden of insurance rests solely on the pizza delivery driver, he/she must get a commercial policy to be covered at all. Delivering the newspaper from your vehicle also falls into a similar situation. Commercial policies for pizza delivery drivers are of course available, but they are generally not always an affordable solution for minimum wage positions. The solution is for the restaurant to supply the insurance for their delivery drivers under something easier and more cost efficient like "non owned vehicle" coverage, if private vehicles are used for the business or to purchase and insure their own dedicated delivery vehicles. People who use their vehicles for business without the required business endorsement or commercial policy could find themselves without coverage in an accident! |
